Well, I learned something new today! My daughter noticed these in our field today and did some research. Apparently corn smut (huitlacoche) is considered a delicacy in Mexico and Central America. There is even a molecular biologist researching huitlacoche at Trent University (Google Barry Saville or 'corn smut' to check it out yourself).
Said to sell for $8 to $16 per ear! You can even buy it canned on Amazon.
Researched recipes for supper .... We discovered it's a sensational food! Corn truffles!! Very tasty! Texture was like ordinary mushrooms. We sautéed some onion and one clove of chopped garlic with them, then added cream to make a corn truffle sauce for T-bone steak. Added Caesar salad and supper is ready. 😋
